Our Very own South African Birds!

The Korck Publishing Wall Poster “Newman’s Birds Endemic to Southern Africa (Fully Revised)”

This up-to-the-minute wall poster features 120 bird species endemic or near endemic to Southern Africa, illustrated by Kenneth Newman. Among the bird families represented on this poster are: batis, bulbul, buzzard, canary, cormorant, chat, flycatcher, francolin, korhaan, lark, pipit, prinia, robin, rock thrush, siskin, starling, sugarbird, sunbird, tit, warbler, weaver and woodpecker.

Birds endemic to a region are birds found in that region and nowhere else. This means that should birds endemic to a region disappear completely from that region, by definition that bird species will have become extinct. The Southern African region is generally accepted as being that part of Africa lying south of the Zambezi-Okavango- Kunene Rivers (approximately 17ºS). Southern Africa, with its rich variety of birdlife, is home to 103 endemic bird species (all but one are illustrated here). Also illustrated are 18 of the 72 near endemic species (whose distribution extends just beyond Southern Africa). Some of these are shown and identified on this poster. Because these birds occur only in our region we bear the sole responsibility for ensuring their continued survival.

Whether you are a serious bird watcher or not, one thing is guaranteed … you will love this poster.
